Vascularized Lymph Node Transplant and Lymph Vessel Transplant
WHO ARE GOOD CANDIDATES FOR VASCULARIZED LYMPH NODE TRANSPLANT AND LYMPH VESSEL TRANSPLANT?
Vascularized lymph node transplant (VLNT) and lymph vessel transplant are advanced surgical options for patients with chronic or advanced-stage lymphedema who have not responded adequately to conservative treatments like compression therapy or manual lymphatic drainage. Ideal candidates often experience persistent swelling, skin thickening, and frequent infections in the affected limb. These procedures are best suited for patients in good overall health who have stable lymphedema and a strong commitment to post-operative care. VLNT may also be considered for patients with lymphatic damage due to cancer treatments such as mastectomy with lymph node dissection or radiation.
THE PROCEDURE: VASCULARIZED LYMPH NODE TRANSPLANT AND LYMPH VESSEL TRANSPLANT
In a vascularized lymph node transplant, healthy lymph nodes—typically harvested from the neck, groin, or abdomen—are transferred along with their blood supply to the area affected by lymphedema. These lymph nodes are then connected to local blood vessels using microsurgical techniques to promote lymphatic regeneration and fluid drainage. In a lymph vessel transplant, functioning lymphatic vessels are harvested from a donor site and grafted into the damaged area to restore lymph flow directly. Both procedures are performed under general anesthesia and require high-level microsurgical expertise. The goal is to reestablish lymphatic circulation, reduce swelling, and improve overall limb function.
EXPECTED RESULTS AND RECOVERY
Following VLNT or lymph vessel transplant, patients can expect gradual reduction in swelling, fewer episodes of cellulitis, and improvement in limb mobility and comfort. Results vary depending on the severity and duration of lymphedema, but many patients report a significant improvement in quality of life. Post-operative recovery includes wearing compression garments, attending physical therapy, and close follow-up with your surgical team. Mild swelling and bruising at both donor and recipient sites are common initially. As new lymphatic pathways develop and integrate, the affected limb typically becomes lighter, softer, and more functional over the course of several months.
