LYMPHA

LYMPHA (Immediate Lymphatic Reconstruction)

WHO ARE GOOD CANDIDATES FOR LYMPHA OR IMMEDIATE LYMPHATIC RECONSTRUCTION?

LYMPHA (Lymphatic Microsurgical Preventive Healing Approach), also known as Immediate Lymphatic Reconstruction (ILR), is an advanced microsurgical procedure designed to prevent lymphedema in patients undergoing lymph node removal, particularly during cancer surgeries such as mastectomy with axillary lymph node dissection. Ideal candidates are patients at high risk for developing lymphedema—most commonly those with breast cancer—who are planning to undergo lymph node surgery and want to take a proactive approach to preserving lymphatic drainage. Candidates should be in good overall health and should discuss the option with both their oncologic and plastic surgery teams prior to surgery.

THE PROCEDURE: LYMPHA / IMMEDIATE LYMPHATIC RECONSTRUCTION

LYMPHA is performed at the time of cancer surgery, immediately after lymph node removal. During the procedure, a plastic and reconstructive microsurgeon connects remaining lymphatic vessels to nearby veins using supermicrosurgical techniques, allowing lymphatic fluid to bypass the removed nodes and continue draining properly. This delicate surgery typically takes place under a microscope and is done in coordination with the oncologic surgeon to ensure it is safely integrated into the cancer treatment plan. By creating a new pathway for lymphatic flow, LYMPHA helps reduce the risk of post-surgical lymphedema and supports long-term limb health.

EXPECTED RESULTS AND RECOVERY

Patients who undergo LYMPHA can expect a significantly reduced risk of developing lymphedema in the months and years following lymph node removal. While not guaranteed to prevent all cases, studies show that LYMPHA can dramatically lower lymphedema rates when performed at the time of cancer surgery. Recovery from LYMPHA is typically integrated into the overall recovery plan for the primary cancer surgery, with minimal added downtime. Patients are monitored closely for signs of swelling and lymphatic function, and may be referred to lymphedema therapy as needed. With early intervention and proper follow-up care, LYMPHA offers a promising preventive option for preserving long-term quality of life after cancer treatment.
