Frequently Asked Questions About Breast Augmentation (FAQ)

Patients at Virginia Plastic Surgery often schedule a breast augmentation consultation after doing extensive research and internet browsing, although some patients rely completely on their surgeon of choice for all of their information. At Virginia Plastic Surgery, we take pride in providing answers to frequently asked questions directly from our plastic surgeons based on previous conversations they’ve had with patients. It is important to always make an informed decision regarding your breast augmentation, so we hope you’ll find the answers below helpful.

Stay tuned for future posts that will include additional FAQs. We look forward to meeting you at your consultation!

1. “If I get a breast augmentation, will I be able to breastfeed one day?”

Yes, you will be able to breastfeed if you get a breast augmentation. Getting a breast aug will not change a person’s ability to breastfeed. However, approximately 30% of women are not able to breastfeed generally for any number of other reasons.

2. “How long do I have to wait to workout after my breast aug?”

If placed underneath the muscle, no chest workouts (pushups, presses, etc.) for 6 weeks. Patients are typically advised to only do lower body workouts until they’ve reached 6 weeks post-op.

3. “Will I have to replace my implants in 10 years?”

No. The information that previously stated implants needed to be removed in 10 years is based on old data that referenced older and lower quality. Since then, technology has advanced and implants used now do not need to be replaced in 10 years.

4. “If I get a breast augmentation, will I lose nipple sensation?”

No. There may be some transient sensations that are temporary and usually resolve within 1 year. At first the skin is stretched but with time, the tissue relaxes and the nerves recover, allowing sensation to return. It is extremely rare for there to be any permanent loss to nipple sensation.

5. “How do I know how many ccs to choose?”

At Virginia Plastic Surgery, we use the Vectra 3D Imaging System so patients can instantly visualize their results. Access to the Vectra 3D Imaging System makes sizing decisions seamless and puts patients at ease prior to their surgery.

6. “Should I get implants over or under the muscle?”

We always recommend that patients get their implants under the muscle because under the muscle has the lowest rate of capsular contraction based on the data we have. Having implants placed under the muscle also provides more soft tissue coverage resulting in a more natural looking breast.
