We all feel better when we're confident in our appearance. But when it comes to breast appearance, time and gravity can sometimes rob us of that self-confidence. Even fit, healthy women are concerned about having breasts that sag, either due to pregnancy, weight loss, or simply age.
As women get older, their breasts lose elasticity and begin to droop. The hormone fluctuations of pregnancy can exacerbate the situation, requiring surgical correction through a Northern Virginia breast lift procedure. Dr. Andrew Goldberg can perform this Fairfax breast enhancement method to:
- Tighten sagging skin
- Restore a firm, smooth shape to your breasts

What a Breast Lift Does
Breast lift, or mastopexy, lifts, tightens, and firms the breasts to restore a more youthful look and feel. By removing excess skin and elevating the remaining tissue and nipples, Dr. Goldberg can surgically reposition and reshape sagging breasts. In addition to tightening and lifting the breast, a breast lift can also reduce the size of the areola, if necessary.
Another concern that can be addressed at the time of breast lift surgery is correction of inverted nipples. Many of our breast lift patients suffer from nipples which have become inverted after breastfeeding, although this condition can also be congenital. Correction of inverted nipples is a relatively simple procedure, utilizing a small incision which leaves minimal scarring. The result is a functional nipple with a natural appearance and projection.
How Breast Lift is Performed
Depending on the degree of lift that is desired, Dr. Goldbert will use one of the following breast lift techniques:
- The Concentric Breast Lift or "Donut" Lift removes a small circle of skin from around the areola (the more darkly pigmented skin surrounding the nipple). After the section of skin is removed, the remaining skin is reattached around the areola, resulting in a slight lifting and tightening of the breast. This method is only for women needing a subtle degree of lifting.
- The Vertical Breast Lift or "Lollipop" Lift utilizes an incision that encircles the areola and descends in a vertical line down the underside of the breast. The nipple is elevated to a higher position on the breast, but remains attached to nerves and blood vessels. Breast tissue is shaped and repositioned, and excess skin is removed. This method is for those with a moderate degree of sagging, or ptosis.
- The Full Anchor Lift is the most commonly-used technique and is for patients requiring a significant degree of lift. This utilizes the same incisions as the vertical lift, with the addition of a crescent shaped incision where the breast meets the chest wall, resulting in an incision that is "anchor-shaped." Through these more extensive incisions, a greater volume of skin is removed and more significant tightening and re-shaping can occur.
Breast Lift with Implants
Because a breast lift does not add any actual volume to the breast, it's a good option for patients who are satisfied with the way their breasts look when they're wearing a bra, but not when the bra is removed. However, Dr. Goldberg often combines a breast lift with breast augmentation in Virginia. Breast implants can result in a fuller and more flattering breast appearance for women who are unhappy with both the size and shape of their breasts.
When you come into our offices for a breast lift consultation, we will thoroughly discuss these considerations with you and make sure you understand the benefits of each surgical method.
