Overcoming obesity is a tremendous accomplishment, requiring hard work, patience, and many sacrifices. The payoff is a slimmer, healthier physique and an improved sense of confidence. But, like many weight loss patients, you may be left with excess, hanging skin that looks unattractive and causes discomfort. This can be particularly troublesome in the thigh area, where residual skin and fat can cause painful chafing and irritation.
A thigh lift by Virginia plastic surgeon Dr. Andrew Goldberg can give the thighs a firmer, more toned appearance after weight loss.
At Virginia Plastic Surgery we specialize in post-bariatric plastic surgery procedures to help you complete your body transformation. Thigh lift surgery in Virginia is one of the more commonly performed post-weight loss plastic surgeries, as it can make a dramatic change in how you look and how you feel.

Thigh lift surgery is performed to:
- Remove excess skin from the inner and outer thighs
- Eliminate chafing and discomfort
Folds of excess skin and pockets of residual fat are very common after significant weight loss, and are a concern for many of our post-weight loss patients. We can sometimes perform thigh lift surgery in conjunction with other procedures for contouring the body, such as a lower body lift, abdominoplasty or a buttock lift. During your consultation, Dr. Goldberg will help you determine which procedure or combination of procedures will work best for you.
During thigh lift surgery, incisions are made in the natural creases where the thighs meet the groin and buttocks so that they are easily concealed. Many patients will also require a vertical scar along the inner part of the thigh to remove additional loose skin. Excess skin can be removed from both the inner and the outer thigh, resulting in a smoother and dramatically slimmer appearance. Dr. Goldberg may tighten lax muscles and reposition underlying tissue as well.
Liposuction is often incorporated into the thigh lift procedure to eliminate residual fat and give the thighs an improved contour. For some patients, liposuction will be performed as a first stage with the thigh lift surgery performed at a later date. This combination often improves the overall result from the surgery.
Thigh Lift Recovery and Results
Sometimes thigh lifts are performed as outpatient procedures; sometimes they require a hospital stay. This is largely dependent on the extent of the surgery and whether or not it is combined with other procedures.
Generally, thigh lift surgery in Virginia requires about two weeks of recovery time, during which the initial bruising and swelling will subside and sutures will be removed. A compression garment will ease swelling and provide support as the skin and underlying tissue heal together. Dr. Goldberg will monitor your recovery closely and let you know when you may resume regular activities. Although you will look noticeably better after about a week, results will continue to emerge over several months.
When you have decided to pursue plastic surgery to complete your weight loss journey, be sure to choose a board certified plastic surgeon with extensive training and experience in dealing with the unique needs of weight loss patients. Dr. Goldberg is a specialist in the area of post-weight loss surgery and works closely with Fair Oaks Hospital, accredited as a Bariatric Center of Excellence.
