Eyelid Surgery

If it is true that the eyes are the windows to the soul, then it makes sense to want your eyes to appear open and bright. However, as we age, the skin around the eyes can become wrinkled, droopy, or puffy, leaving us looking tired and perhaps even grumpy. Hooded eyelids can even impair vision, in addition to making us appear older.

Dr. Goldberg specializes in Fairfax County, Virginia eyelid surgery to help alleviate these symptoms.

An eyelid lift, also known as a blepharoplasty, carefully trims away excess fat and skin from the delicate eyelid area to deliver a youthful, energized appearance. Upper and lower eyelid lifts may be necessary to fully rejuvenate the eye area and create the most natural effect. These procedures are often performed in conjunction with a Virginia facelift to leave the face with a balanced, youthful appearance.

Fairfax Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty, is a very commonly-performed plastic surgery procedure. This is because it is a relatively straightforward surgery that produces significant results. Unfortunately, the delicate skin around the eyes is one of the first areas to deteriorate as you age, and deep wrinkles and sagging or puffy skin in this area can make you look older than you'd like. Dr. Goldberg can bring a brighter, more open appearance to the eye area with either upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery, or a combination procedure.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

This procedure can remove excess, sagging skin and fat from the upper eyelid area to open up the eye area and get rid of the fatigued or stern appearance that comes from heavy, hooded lids.

  • An incision is made in the crease of the eyelid, extending just past the corner of the eye
  • A small crescent of skin is removed
  • Fatty tissue is sculpted to create a more alert and youthful appearance
  • Since the incision is hidden in the natural creases of the eye, scars are practically undetectable

It is important to be sure that Virginia eyelid surgery is the appropriate procedure. Sometimes a droopy appearance in the upper eye area is caused by sagging of the brow itself. In this case, a brow lift may be necessary to correct the condition.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

The traditional approach to lower eyelid surgery utilizes a fine incision just beneath the lower lashes. Through this opening, wrinkled skin is removed and adjustments are made to the existing muscle and fat to eliminate puffiness or muscle laxity. The incision heals nicely, leaving an almost invisible scar.

If under eye puffiness is the sole issue, the transconjunctival or "scarless" technique can be employed. This requires no external incision, as it is performed through the inside of the lower lid. Through this approach, fat can be removed or redistributed to decrease or eliminate puffiness. Although this technique does not address under eye wrinkling, sometimes it can be combined with laser skin enhancement for the elimination of minor wrinkles.
