Many women and men work hard to achieve a healthy, fit appearance. However, even hours at the gym and a strict diet sometimes fail to yield the results we desire. Factors beyond our control – such as heredity – often curse us with unwanted bulges that seem to resist all our best efforts to shrink them.
Liposuction in Virginia is popular because it can permanently remove isolated pockets of fat and re-contour "trouble spots."

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes unwanted pockets of fat from the body by suctioning it out though a thin vacuum tube, called a cannula, inserted under the skin. This procedure can be performed under local or general anesthesia depending upon the quantity of fat being removed and the number of areas being treated. Both options are available, as Dr. Goldberg safely performs these outpatient procedures in certified hospital surgical facilities. As with any surgical procedure, there will be discomfort afterward, but this is easily managed with either prescription or over-the-counter pain medication.
Your Liposuction Options
New advancements in liposuction technology are continually being announced. Virginia board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Goldberg offers only the liposuction techniques that are proven effective. During your consultation, he will determine which type or combination will work best for your unique anatomy and desired outcome. Options include:
- Tumescent liposuction features the injection of an anesthetic liquid into the fatty tissue immediately prior to its removal. This liquid causes the fat pockets to become swollen and firm, making the procedure easier to perform and providing pain relief after the surgery. Tumescent liposuction reduces the patient's chances for post-operative blood loss, swelling, or bruising. It also allows for the safe removal of larger quantities of fat than the older techniques permitted.
- Ultrasonic liposuction uses high-frequency ultrasound energy to safely break apart the fat and liquefy it. The gentle technique avoids damaging or disrupting surrounding tissue, nerves, and blood vessels. Our VASER® Lipo ultrasonic liposuction system makes fat easier to remove, so the patient's physique can be more precisely contoured.
- Power-assisted liposuction uses a rapidly vibrating cannula to break up the targeted fat. This technology increases precision and efficiency over the traditional manual back-and-forth movement. Fat can be rapidly removed in a gentle, controlled fashion.
Liposuction is not appropriate as a weight loss tool, but can remove stubborn, isolated areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. If you have a great deal of excess fat along with loose skin and muscle in your abdominal area, Dr. Goldberg may recommend combining your liposuction with a tummy tuck.
Liposuction Recovery and Results
Dr. Goldberg is a highly trained liposuction surgeon who makes every effort to minimize the downtime and discomfort associated with liposuction. Your recovery will depend on many variables, including the size of the treated area and the type of procedure you undergo. Generally, liposuction patients return to work and everyday activities within 1 to 2 weeks of surgery. You will be given specific instructions for your aftercare by your surgeon, which will include wearing a tight-fitting support garment for several weeks and walking regularly to prevent blood clot formation.
After a few weeks, you will be able to begin enjoying your new, sleeker physique. Though the fat removal is permanent, it is important that you maintain a stable weight in order to retain the new and improved body shape that this procedure affords you.
Dr. Goldberg can assist you in determining which method of liposuction – or combination of methods – is best suited to your particular needs.
