Arm Lift

Weight loss has changed your life for the better. You are healthier, more energetic, and able to wear clothes that you couldn't before you shed all those pounds. Unfortunately, you may feel like your transformation is incomplete due to excess skin and fatty deposits that remain even after you reach your goal weight. Hanging skin on the upper arms can be a constant reminder of the "old you," causing discomfort and embarrassment.

Dr. Andrew Goldberg specializes in post-weight loss surgery in Virginia to help patients like you enhance their weight loss results. For sagging skin and residual fat on the arms, he can perform arm lift surgery, also known as brachioplasty, to achieve a firmer, trimmer upper arm.

Arm Lift

Arm lift surgery in Fairfax, Virginia is performed to eliminate the excess skin and residual fat in the upper arms that remains after significant weight loss. It is often performed in combination with other body contouring procedures such as thigh lift or breast lift to maximize results and minimize downtime. Dr. Goldberg will discuss which procedure or combination of procedures will most safely and effectively achieve your appearance goals.

To contour the arms, incisions are typically made along the inner arm or along the back of the arm. The incision length will depend on the extent of excess tissue to be removed. In many cases, the incision will run from the elbow to the armpit, but sometimes a more limited incision may be used. If excess skin is found on the outside of the chest, then the incision can be extended onto the lateral chest wall to tighten this area as well. These incisions are very well concealed and the skin in this area tends to heal well. The skin and underlying muscles are tightened and excess skin is removed. Any residual fat may be removed with liposuction.

Arm Lift Recovery and Results

Recovery from brachioplasty is different for each person, but generally you can expect to feel "back to normal" after a week or two. During recovery, you should expect:

  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Stitches

You may require prescription pain medication for a few days following surgery. You will wear a compression garment on your arms to help ease swelling and promote comfort and healing.

Most patients return to work after about a week, but heavy lifting or exercise should be avoided for several weeks. Dr. Goldberg will advise you as to how your recovery is progressing and when you may return to normal activities. You will see noticeable improvement in the first week; gradual improvement will continue over the course of several months.
