Your Tattoo Removal Procedure
Tattoos are treated with a specially-designed laser that breaks up the pigment so it can be reabsorbed by the body. We use a Q-Switched YAG Laser, the Spectra QT, which is regarded by many in the field as the most effective laser for tattoo removal. This laser specifically targets the darker pigments of the tattoo, leaving surrounding tissue unharmed and intact. The laser delivers a very strong and very precise beam of light onto the skin, either in a continuous wave or in pulses, which penetrates the skin, dissolving the tattoo ink. The body's natural cleansing system then eliminates the pigments over the course of several months.
Treatments are scheduled for every 6 to 8 weeks until the tattoos have faded adequately. Patients typically require an average of 6 to 8 treatments for complete tattoo removal, although this depends on many factors. Black ink responds more quickly to the laser, whereas other colors, such as bright green, are more resistant. Larger, multicolored tattoos will require more treatments than smaller, single-colored tattoos.
The good news is that virtually all tattoos will respond to laser treatment, and most patients will not have any residual scarring from the procedure. However, some patients with darker skin may experience pigmentation irregularities in the treated areas. Your Virginia plastic surgeon can help you to determine if you are a good candidate for laser tattoo removal.
We offer many resources related to laser tattoo removal. You can download home care instructions to learn what steps you should take during recovery and even print a treatment consent form to bring with you during your first treatment.
